## How the calculator estimates

### Cooper run
Run as far as you can in 12 minutes. Cooper (1968) validated the formula against laboratory measurements with a correlation of r ≈ 0.90 — the most accurate of the three field estimates.

### Walk test (Rockport)
Walk 1 mile (1.6 km) briskly, then take your pulse. The Kline equation (1987) is easy on the joints and particularly well validated for ages 30 to 69 (standard error ±5).

### Without a test (non-exercise)
The model by Jackson et al. (1990) estimates VO2max with no exertion at all, from age, sex, BMI and activity. The most accessible option, but coarser than the two field tests.

## Frequently asked questions about VO2max
What is VO2max? → VO2max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can take up and use per minute under exertion, given in millilitres per kilogram of body weight per minute. It is considered one of the best single markers of cardiorespiratory endurance fitness.

Can VO2max be calculated without a lab test? → Yes, approximately. Non-exercise models estimate the value with no exertion at all from age, sex, BMI and activity level (Jackson et al. 1990). A field test is more accurate: the 12-minute run per Cooper (1968) correlates at r ≈ 0.90 with laboratory measurement, and the 1-mile walk test per Kline (1987) is a joint-friendly alternative.

How accurate is the estimate? → The standard error of the non-exercise estimate is around 5 ml/kg/min, so your individual value can deviate noticeably. An exact determination is only possible via spiroergometry (breath-gas analysis under exertion). The estimate is suitable for a rough classification and for tracking trends.

What is a good VO2max value? → That depends strongly on age and sex. Among men aged 20 to 29 the median is around 48 ml/kg/min; among women in the same group around 38, and both values decline with age. The classification in this calculator uses the percentile norms of the Cooper Institute and the ACSM.

Why does VO2max matter? → In large cohort studies, higher cardiorespiratory fitness is associated at population level with lower all-cause mortality. VO2max is also trainable — targeted endurance and interval training can raise it measurably over months.
