Check-up for privately insured patients what you are actually entitled to.

The statutory preventive check-up in Germany (every three years from age 35) covers a medical history interview, blood pressure, a small blood panel (glucose, cholesterol), urine status and a consultation — usually 15 to 30 minutes. A private check-up is billed as a private medical service under GOÄ and can be considerably more comprehensive. At YEARS that means 87 biomarkers, ECG, echocardiography, vascular ultrasound, lung function, spiroergometry, bone density, body scan and cognitive testing in a single day, with an in-depth physician consultation.

Unlike patients with statutory insurance, private insurance gives you a contractual entitlement to private medical care — and that includes comprehensive prevention. Most private policies cover preventive examinations under GOÄ fully or largely, often with annual allowances. Some premium policies include explicit budgets for “extended preventive medicine” or “check-ups”. Check your policy terms or call your insurer — the keyword is “Vorsorge nach GOÄ” (preventive care under GOÄ).

We recommend YEARS Core (€1,900). Core includes 25 functional tests and 87 biomarkers — all with established GOÄ item numbers that are fully reimbursable under most private policies. Evolve and Ultimate additionally include whole-body MRI, liquid biopsy, genetics and microbiome analysis — valuable, but not all of these services are reimbursable under every policy. Core therefore gives you the best balance of diagnostic depth, reimbursement rate and out-of-pocket cost.

That depends on your policy. Policies without a deductible often reimburse 80 to 100 percent of the GOÄ diagnostics in Core. With a deductible (frequently €300 to €1,500 per year), reimbursement applies only after the deductible has been offset. Example for a policy without a deductible: on a GOÄ invoice of €1,900, the insurer typically reimburses €1,200 to €1,700 — so your out-of-pocket share is often between €200 and €700. We do not recommend submitting a request in advance, as in practice it often reduces the reimbursement — we clarify the details transparently in the consultation.

Civil servants entitled to Beihilfe, the German civil-servant benefit scheme (federal, state and municipal), are reimbursed the eligible share of their treatment costs. Diagnostic services under GOÄ are generally eligible. After the Beihilfe reimbursement, your supplementary private insurance covers the remainder. Some Beihilfe offices require a written pre-enquiry for extensive preventive examinations — we support you with the request and provide the GOÄ item numbers in advance.
