Microbiome analysiswithin a check-up, not as a standalone test.
A microbiome result on its own is hard to read. At YEARS the gut flora sequencing is read together with inflammatory markers, metabolic values and nutrient status, and interpreted by a physician. One day in Berlin, around 15 minutes from the main station.

Why this matters
The test is easy to get. The interpretation is the hard part.
Microbiome kits are plentiful in Germany: a tube by post, send the sample back, a dashboard with bars and traffic-light colours. What is missing is the connection to everything else. Whether a shift in your gut flora means anything depends on what your inflammatory markers look like, how your metabolism is running and what symptoms you actually have.
There is also an uncomfortable truth about the field itself: microbiome research is young, and many of the popular claims are associations rather than established causes. We take that as a reason to work more carefully and promise less, not as a reason to skip it. We tell you what the analysis can do. And what it cannot.
Standalone test by post
1
One sample, one dashboard, a comparison against a reference group. No blood work alongside, no physician, no symptom history. What you do with it is left to you.

Gut flora together with inflammation, metabolism, nutrient status and functional diagnostics. A physician reads it in context and tells you whether and what follows.

How we work
Four reasons we do not offer the microbiome on its own
A result that does not stand alone
A microbiome report on its own is hard to read. Together with inflammatory markers (hsCRP), metabolic values and vitamin and iron status it becomes a picture that points somewhere. That is exactly why we do not offer it as a standalone test.
Sequencing in a laboratory, not in your living room
Sample handling determines how meaningful the result is. We work with laboratory partners and defined protocols rather than a tube that spent days in transit. What is captured is the composition and diversity of the gut flora plus indications of fungal colonisation.
Medical interpretation included
No app dashboard with traffic-light colours, but a conversation with a physician. They interpret what your values mean in the context of your symptoms and the rest of the diagnostics, and what follows from them.
Honest about the limits
Microbiome research is young. Many links are associations rather than established causes, and an analysis is not a diagnostic test for a disease. We tell you where the evidence is solid and where it is not. And we do not sell you supplements alongside it.
What the analysis captures
And where its reach ends.
The last point is deliberately on this page. An analysis whose limits nobody names is hard to judge.
Composition and diversity
Which bacterial groups are present and in what proportion. Low diversity is one of the few findings consistently associated with less favourable outcomes in studies.
Dysbiosis patterns
Shifts in the balance of bacterial groups, for instance after a course of antibiotics or with persistent digestive complaints. This is where the result is most likely to be actionable.
Indications of fungal colonisation
Overgrowth of yeasts can be captured alongside. Whether it requires treatment is decided by the clinical context, not by the laboratory value alone.
Link to inflammation and metabolism
The real gain within a check-up: the microbiome is read together with hsCRP, HbA1c, insulin and nutrient status. Only that combination can carry a recommendation.
Nutrition as the concrete lever
What can be influenced most reliably is fibre and plant diversity in your diet. That becomes an actionable plan, with our nutrition consultation if you want it.
What an analysis cannot do
It does not diagnose a disease, does not predict a disease course and does not produce an individual diet plan with scientific certainty. Anyone promising that is overstating the evidence.

Gut flora in context
A bar chart of your bacteria is not information yet. Only the context turns it into one.
How it works if you travel in
One trip, one day, results consultation without a second journey.
Free intro call
Beforehand and without travelling. We clarify what you want investigated and say honestly whether a microbiome analysis adds anything in your case.
One day in Berlin
Medical history, sample collection and the rest of the programme diagnostics in one appointment in City West, around 15 minutes from the main station. Breakfast and lunch included.
Laboratory analysis
Sequencing runs at our laboratory partners following defined protocols. That takes a few days; the other values from your check-up are available earlier.
Medical results consultation
A physician reads the microbiome result together with inflammation, metabolism and nutrient status and translates it into concrete steps, usually around diet. Without a second trip if you prefer, report delivered digitally.

Frequently asked questions about microbiome analysis
Most offerings in Germany are standalone tests: a kit by post, one sample, a results dashboard. Embedded in physician-led diagnostics the analysis is considerably rarer, mostly found at preventive medicine clinics and some gastroenterology centres. YEARS is a physician-led preventive medicine clinic in Berlin City West working with patients from all over Germany. The microbiome analysis is part of the Ultimate programme and is interpreted together with inflammatory, metabolic and nutrient markers.
Because a microbiome result on its own is hard to read. You get a list of bacterial groups and a comparison against a reference group, but nobody who connects that with your symptoms, your inflammatory markers and your metabolism. That is exactly where the medical value arises. Sample quality matters too: processing time and transport affect the result. If all you want is orientation, a home test is legitimate. For a medical statement it is not enough.
That is the normal case for us. The complete check-up takes place in one day; the clinic is in City West, around 15 minutes from the main station and easy to reach from the airport. The sample for the microbiome analysis is organised as part of the appointment, and the laboratory analysis then takes a few days. The medical results consultation follows afterwards, without a second trip if you prefer. You receive the written report digitally.
Mixed, and we say so openly. It is well supported that the composition of the gut flora relates to immune function, metabolism and digestion, and that low diversity is associated with less favourable outcomes in studies. Considerably weaker is the evidence for causal claims about individual bacterial groups and for individual diet plans derived from them. A microbiome analysis is not a diagnostic test for a disease. It provides orientation that becomes useful in the context of the rest of the diagnostics.
It makes most sense with persistent unexplained digestive complaints, after prolonged or repeated courses of antibiotics, with recurring infections, or if you want to change your diet deliberately and need a baseline. It makes less sense as an end in itself when you have no complaints at all, because usually no consequence follows. In the free intro call we say openly if we consider the benefit low in your case.
The microbiome analysis is part of the Ultimate programme from €16,900, which additionally includes genomics, epigenetics and neurology. As a private medical service we bill according to GOÄ, and reimbursement is possible depending on your policy: privately insured patients submit the invoice to their insurer, and with occupational health insurance the annual budget applies. German statutory health insurance generally does not cover microbiome analysis. The insurer always decides bindingly.
We do not sell supplements and earn nothing from recommendations. If a probiotic seems sensible in your case we will say so and explain why, but the first lever is almost always diet: fibre and plant diversity have the best evidence and the most reliable effect on composition. Where the evidence for a supplement is thin, we say that too, rather than recommending something that merely sounds good.
Let us first establish whether it helps in your case.
Book a free intro call. We say honestly whether a microbiome analysis makes sense for your case or whether the smaller route is enough.
